A man and woman in their 30s are expected to face charges on Friday (Dec 15) for allegedly using criminal force and employing abusive and insulting language against two National Environmental Agency (NEA) officers. The incident occurred on July 23 this year near Orchard Link, a popular stretch within the Orchard Road precinct, according to TODAY.
No-Smoking Zone Violation Leads to Confrontation
The NEA officers were conducting enforcement rounds at 6.50 pm whey they encountered a man, 33, and a woman, 38, smoking in a designated no-smoking area. Prompted by their violation of smoking regulations implemented since 2019, the officers approached the duo to issue a summons for non-compliance.
Verbal Abuse and Physical Altercation
During the exchange, tension escalated as the man reportedly verbally abused the officers. His actions extended to tapping one officer’s body-worn camera and pulling on the lanyard worn around the other officer’s neck. Simultaneously, the woman allegedly pushed one officer’s hand and attempted to touch his face.
Legal Consequences: Charges Pending
The culmination of the confrontation led to the arrest of the man and woman. Subsequently, they are set to face charges related to criminal force, verbal abuse, and physical altercation against the NEA officers. The charges highlight the seriousness of the alleged misconduct in a public space.
Smoking Regulations in Orchard Road Precinct
Since 2019, Orchard Road precinct has been designated as a no-smoking zone, restricting smoking to designated areas. The enforcement of these regulations aims to maintain a clean and healthy environment for both residents and visitors in the bustling shopping belt.
Concerns for Enforcement Officers’ Safety
The incident underscores the challenges faced by enforcement officers in upholding regulations and ensuring public compliance. Verbal abuse and physical altercations pose not only immediate threats but also raise concerns about the safety of officers carrying out their duties.
