The SCDF commended two men for their heroic efforts in saving a man who was stuck inside a car following a car crash inside the SLE tunnel.
The man was saved moments before the car burst into flames.

The two men, Johnson Chia Yong Lee and Azlee Bin Abd Shukor were presented with the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award by COL Lim Beng Hui, Commander 3rd SCDF Division.

“You might have seen videos circulating online a few weeks ago of smoke billowing dramatically out from the SLE underpass. What you didn’t see was the teamwork of a dynamic duo to save the day…
On 2 November 2021, during the early evening rush hour traffic at about 5.00pm, two gentlemen rescued a driver from a car that was on fire at the exit 1 slip road of the underpass along SLE (towards BKE).
One of these gentlemen, Mr Johnson Chia Yong Lee, was driving along SLE when he saw a car careen across the road and hit the left wall of the underpass. He saw black smoke emitting from the damaged car and immediately stopped his car. Driven by a sense of duty, he got out of his car and rushed over to help.
When he reached the affected car, a fire was developing within it. The driver was still in the burning car and in a daze! Mr Johnson opened the driver’s door and swiftly brought the dazed driver out of the car.
Another gentleman, Mr Azlee Bin Abd Shukor, was driving a van when he spotted black smoke and flames in the SLE underpass. Then, he saw Mr Johnson waving frantically for assistance. Realizing the precarious situation, he stopped his van alongside Mr Johnson.
Working as a team, the duo brought the dazed driver into Mr Azlee’s van. They then drove further down the road towards safety, away from the intense heat and smoke of the burning car.
For their gallant rescue and timely intervention, Mr Johnson and Mr Azlee were each presented with the SCDF Community Lifesaver Award by COL Lim Beng Hui, Commander 3rd SCDF Division, today.
