In an unfortunate incident between an E-bike rider and an elderly woman, an accident occurred on 30th March 2020.
The incident happened at Toa Payoh while the woman was fetching her grandchild from a primary school.
According to Straits Times, On Thursday (May 19) 33-year-old S. Davanand was sentenced to four days in jail after he pleaded guilty to one count of causing hurt by performing a rash act.
Background:
During the period of the accident, E-bikes were already prohibited from riding and the man continued to do so.
He was working as a Deliveroo rider during the time of the incident and he was riding a power-assisted bicycle that weighs over 20kilograms.
On 30 March 2020, at around 1.25 PM he was riding along Toa Payoh Lorong 1 while the victim was waiting for her grandchild from CHIJ Primary school.
As he rode past the elderly woman, the victim’s umbrella was hooked onto the bicycle and the woman fell to the ground injuring her shoulder and jaw and dragging her for a short distance before he stopped.
The injuries she sustained had to undergo surgery and the bills amounted to over $17,000.
Deliveroo paid $8,000, the victim’s insurer paid $8,697 and Davanand paid the rest earlieer this year.
He could have been jailed up to a year and fined up to S$5,000.
