Would you give $2 to an elderly lady when she begs for it?
I was sitting outside a vet clinic earlier today waiting for my UberPet, and an elderly lady, who was lingering around, approached me and asked for a dollar. I happened to not have my wallet on me, and she made this remark in Mandarin “if you don’t want to give money, just say. Don’t say you didn’t bring your wallet. I have no choice so I’m begging, I have to have thick skin.” Something along those lines.
She went away for about 2 mins and I continued waiting for my uber. I felt slightly guilty because I was willing to spend transport and vet fees for an animal – but can’t spare $2 for an old lady? She came back and asked again, and I found that I have some spare change from a $10 note I brought out. I gave her $2 and she said “Bless you, hope you find a good husband”
Few minutes later, she asked another guy coming out from the vet, asking for money again.
I don’t know why, but this makes me feel uneasy. She was not incapacitated in any way – she walks and talks properly. I really just gave her the note so I can be left alone. But just curious – what are your thoughts on this?
And also, has anyone encountered a tissue seller scolding you when you don’t want to buy tissue at hawker centre?
