An elderly woman in China has gone viral online after she was spotted arriving at a restaurant in a luxury Bentley — not to dine, but to wash dishes.

The unusual story, first reported by News18, quickly captured the attention of social media users across Asia after videos of the woman surfaced online.

According to reports, the woman lives in Chengdu and comes from a wealthy family. Despite her financial comfort, she reportedly spends her mornings working at a local restaurant washing dishes and helping with cleaning duties.

What shocked many online users was her mode of transport.

The woman was seen stepping out of a Bentley reportedly worth around Rs 3 crore, which converts to approximately S$510,000. Dressed in a simple striped shirt, apron and rubber boots, she then headed straight into the eatery to begin work like any regular staff member.

Says She Feels “Uncomfortable” If She Does Not Wash Dishes

Chinese media reported that the luxury vehicle belongs to her family, and her daughter allegedly drives her to the restaurant every morning.

However, despite her affluent lifestyle, the elderly woman explained that she does not work for money.

Instead, she said the routine gives her something meaningful to do.

Speaking to local reporters, she reportedly shared that she feels bored staying home all day and enjoys being around people.

She also admitted that she feels physically uncomfortable if she skips washing dishes for even a day.

The story quickly spread across Chinese social media platforms before screenshots and clips made their way onto Instagram, X and other international platforms, where thousands reacted to the unusual contrast between luxury and manual labour.

Social Media Users Praise Her Humble Lifestyle

Many online users praised the woman for staying active despite her age and wealth.

Several commenters said her behaviour showed that human connection and purpose are more important than material possessions, especially during old age.

Others pointed out that remaining physically active could contribute to better health and mental wellbeing for seniors.

Some users joked that while many people dream of quitting work after becoming rich, the woman voluntarily chose to continue doing physically demanding tasks simply to avoid boredom.

Another group of commenters noted that wealthy individuals sometimes continue working not out of necessity, but because routines and social interaction become an important part of life.

The story has since become one of the latest viral discussions online surrounding wealth, ageing, and the idea that happiness does not always come from luxury alone.

In recent years, similar stories from China involving wealthy individuals choosing simple lifestyles have frequently attracted attention online, especially when they sharply contrast with public expectations of how rich people are “supposed” to live.
