Elderly Pressured Into S$1,294 Scalp Package At Clementi Salon, Son Lodges Police & CASE Reports

A Singaporean man has taken to Google reviews to warn others after his 71-year-old mother was allegedly pressured into purchasing a costly beauty treatment package at a Clementi salon. The incident has sparked renewed public concern over aggressive sales tactics and consumer protection in the local beauty industry.

In his online review, CK Leong claimed that his elderly mother, who works as a cleaner and is known to be careful with her spending, was persuaded into signing up for a 12-session scalp treatment package costing S$1,294.92. The salon involved is Salon One, specifically its outlet along Clementi Avenue 3.

According to Mr Leong, the family only discovered the transaction after spotting the charge on her bank statement. When questioned, his mother reportedly shared that she had been asked to sign documents during the visit. However, she was allegedly told that the paperwork was “for GST purposes” and was not provided with a copy of the agreement outlining the package’s terms and conditions.

Family Raises Concerns Over Hard-Selling Practices

Mr Leong described the experience as deeply upsetting, particularly because his mother earns a modest income and works long hours. He expressed concern that elderly customers may be more vulnerable to persistent sales pressure, especially when complex financial commitments are involved.

The family has since lodged formal reports with the Singapore Police Force and the Consumer Association of Singapore (CASE), seeking further investigation into the matter. Consumer rights in Singapore fall under the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act (CPFTA), which prohibits unfair practices such as exerting undue pressure or using misleading claims to secure a sale.

The Competition & Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) has previously taken action against beauty establishments over similar complaints. In fact, in 2023, the authority issued a statement indicating that outlets linked to Salon One had engaged in persistent sales tactics between 2017 and 2022, causing customers to feel pressured into purchasing services they had initially declined.

While Salon One’s social media platforms contain numerous positive testimonials, negative reviews highlighting alleged high-pressure sales strategies remain visible on public review platforms.
