ERP Gantries To Be Gradually Removed As S’pore Rolls Out ERP 2, Roadside Parking Trial Starts In August

Singapore will begin phasing out its familiar Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) gantries from late 2026 as the country prepares to fully transition to the new satellite-based ERP 2 system from Jan. 1, 2027.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that physical ERP gantries will be progressively removed, starting with those that are no longer in operation.

Unlike the current system, ERP 2 uses Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology to determine a vehicle’s location, eliminating the need for overhead gantries across Singapore’s roads.

About 1,000 Motorists Participating In ERP 2 Trial

To help motorists adapt to the new system, around 1,000 participants are currently involved in a user experience trial that began on Jun. 1, 2026.

The majority of participants are passenger car owners and motorcyclists, while a smaller group includes taxi drivers, bus operators, coach drivers and heavy vehicle owners.

Participants will provide feedback on the effectiveness of the new ERP road signs and lane markings, as well as their experience using new features such as roadside electronic parking through the On-Board Unit (OBU).

The two-phase study first started in March 2026, with refinements made following feedback from the first phase.

New Road Markings Will Replace Familiar ERP Gantries

With physical gantries disappearing, LTA is testing several new visual indicators to alert motorists that they are entering ERP charging zones.

Five different combinations of signs and road markings are currently being trialled at locations near existing ERP gantries.

Some of the proposed changes include:

  • Blue oval “ERP” symbols painted on every lane
  • 25-metre blue painted road stretches
  • White “ERP” words painted on roads
  • Blue lane dividers replacing existing white lane markings

The trial locations include sections of the PIE, CTE, Marina Boulevard and AYE.

Drivers Will Receive ERP Alerts Before Reaching Charging Zones

Under ERP 2, motorists will receive an “ERP Ahead” notification directly through their OBU before entering a charging location.

On expressways, notifications will generally appear about 200 metres before the charging point, while on smaller roads, alerts will appear around 60 metres beforehand.

The alert zones are strategically placed at the last available exit before motorists enter a chargeable section, allowing them to choose an alternative route if they wish to avoid paying ERP charges.

Roadside Electronic Parking To Begin Trial In August

Starting from August 2026, LTA will also pilot its new Roadside Electronic Parking (REP) system.

The pilot will cover 644 designated parking locations across Singapore, involving approximately 19,000 parking lots.

Under the new system, motorists can start a parking session directly from their OBU touchscreen by tapping the “P” icon or selecting a parking prompt that appears after switching off their engine.

Drivers will still need to confirm that they intend to park before charges begin.

Once the vehicle leaves the parking area, the OBU will automatically detect the departure, end the parking session and calculate the parking fees without requiring motorists to manually stop the timer.

Motorists without touchscreen displays can continue using the Parking.sg application.

More Than 96% Of Vehicles Already Equipped With ERP 2

As of May 31, 2026, around 960,000 vehicles, or more than 96 per cent of all vehicles in Singapore, have already installed the ERP 2 On-Board Unit.

About 98 per cent of those motorists opted for the touchscreen display version, which offers additional functions such as:

  • Paying outstanding ERP charges
  • Paying roadside parking fees
  • Temporarily disabling CEPAS card payments for complimentary parking

Vehicle owners who have not yet installed the new system must do so by Dec. 31, 2026, ahead of the nationwide transition on Jan. 1, 2027.

LTA said the ongoing trials will help authorities gather feedback and refine the system before ERP 2 is fully rolled out across Singapore.
