Calvin Cheng, a former Nominated Member of Parliament, said on 22 February that all female Singapore citizens and PRs, as well as male citizens who never served National Service, should pay a special tax so that the allowances for National Servicemen can be raised.

I fully support NS allowances to be raised.
Food and lodging cannot be counted – it’s mandatory national service. Nobody would choose to stay in barracks and eat in a cookhouse.
But the money cannot come out of general tax payers.
National service is a contribution of time and effort
Residents of Singapore who do not do NS are free riding on people who serve NS.
I propose that a special tax on all female citizens and PRs , as well as all male citizens and PRs who never served NS, be imposed.
This tax can then be used to pay increased allowances to men who do NS.

- You are entering a slippery slope of forcing those who contribute “less” physically and economically to contribute “more” in monetary terms. While we are at that, why don’t we tax childless people to pay to people with children? How about taxing handicapped people, prisoners, pensioners and patients to pay those working? Why should the rich who contribute the most to the country be taxed more? Hell they need not pay tax at all with all the jobs they are creating. Unfortunately in a society, the most able will have to carry the less able. That’s what it takes to build up and live in a society.
