How do you trust low crime in SG?
Hi, I am expat and came to Singapore 8 months ago. I never experience or see any thieves in Singapore.
I cycle to work and usually park my bicycle (800 SGD one) in public bicycle bay all days with an simple lock (forgot to lock several time).
Nothing lost so far, I also noticed that there are many cars and motorcycles park also park outside overnight. So I felt very safe here.
But I raised a thieve topic to some public groups, other members fear thieves way more than I do. They told stories about bicycle or part of it got stolen from public parking bay or even condo or HDB parking under CCTVs…
However all stories are someone else stories, no one in those conversation ever lost anything yet (may be because there are careful).
How do you guys think about it? It is a real risk or just a myth. Am I too lucky and naive or other over react over old stories ?

- yeah bicycle theft is real but its usually those opportunistic kind of theft instead of a “career thief”
because its very low risk and high reward, same as shoplifting (thats why u see that handso gent poster everywhere)
but robberies/snatchers are pretty much nonexistant, even if you managed to escape … where are you gonna run? the whole island is a giant walled garden- (OP) what should I do if someday my bicycle got stolen? Does the police take serious actions like trace the CCTVs?
- Depends. Last time i got bike kenna stolen. Report but nothing happened.
If there is a high incidence rate maybe, but they will definitely put bigger crimes on a higher priority.
That’s why if you gonna cycle and park in the public parking area, just cycle some shitty bike, or park it in a very obvious spot with 2 locks or something.
Bike thieves cannibalise whole bikes and sell them so it is unlikely you can get it in whole if it gets stolen

- Friend of mine had her bike stolen. It was recorded by CCTV. Police managed to catch the thief and forced them to repay the bike’s worth back to my friend. (Couldn’t return the bike since I think it got scrapped for parts already)
