A local woman, Alethea Seet, discovered “white stuff” on her xiao long bao, which she later identified as pieces of plastic from the packaging, after purchasing a packet of Golden Chef Xiao Long Bao from FairPrice. Seet, who had bought the dumplings from the Fairprice App and received them on March 18, told Yahoo Southeast Asia that she had steamed a few of them for a meal the next day when she noticed the plastic shards on at least three of the dumplings.
Upon further investigation, Seet found that the plastic from the tray used to contain the dumplings was broken, and bits of plastic were scattered over the frozen dim sum pieces. Seet informed FairPrice about the issue, and after asking for photos, the company arranged for someone to collect the tainted items.
However, when Seet’s husband ordered another packet of xiao long baos from the same brand, the same issue of the broken plastic tray persisted. Seet reported the issue to FairPrice, who then asked her to dispose of the item and initiated a refund of the items on the FairPrice app.
A spokesperson from FairPrice Group told Yahoo that the company is investigating the matter and temporarily suspended the sales of the product as a precautionary measure. The company has also reached out to the affected customer to provide a refund and address any concerns they may have.
Seet’s discovery raises concerns about the quality of the product and the possibility of similar issues with other products. A check of FairPrice’s website at press time found that the item listings had been removed.
FairPrice’s response to the issue is commendable, as the company takes any food-related concerns seriously and promptly addressed Seet’s concerns. As a reputable supermarket chain, FairPrice must ensure the quality and safety of their products, especially when it comes to food. The company should conduct a thorough investigation to identify the root cause of the issue and implement appropriate measures to prevent similar issues in the future.
Consumers, on the other hand, must also exercise caution when purchasing and consuming food products. If they notice any issues with the products, they should report them to the relevant authorities and the company immediately. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and the need to take immediate action when issues arise.
