FATHER GIVES CHILDREN 2-MONTH NOTICE TO PAY HIM $1K RENTAL OR MOVE OUT

Can my dad evict me(26M) from our family house?

Advertisements

Hi everyone, would like to ask this question to see if anyone has gone through this situation before.

My father has been unemployed ever since he’s been retrenched in 2020. He’s been threatening to sell off our family’s HDB (co-owned by my mom and him) ever since, claiming he’s in need of money.

My father has been the sole breadwinner and my mom has been a housewife ever since we bought this HDB.

I’m not in good talking terms with him, but I do pay my mother 10% of my salary every month which is about $300-$400.

Now he’s giving my brother and I a ‘2 month- notice’ to pay a $1K rental to him (in addition to what we’re giving to our mother) for our rooms or move out.

I am not inclined to pay the ‘rental’ as I’ve been trying to save up more to buy a flat with my SO to move out. And we all know how crazy the rental market is.

I was wondering if any other people had faced a similar situation before and would like some advice. Can my father legally ‘evict’ me? Or does it require my mom’s consent as well?

  • Your dad is in a financial difficulties. The room you and your brother is staying in is a revenue generator for him and your mom. By not renting it out, they are losing money every month and you are saving money every month.
Not sure what is the relationship nuance between you and your dad , but i suggest having an adult talk with him on an adult topic with two adult minded person. Leave emotion out of this for a moment and look at this objectively. Discuss for a reduction in rental as compared to the market because they get to see their children instead of strangers and tenants. Good Luck
  • Yes he can evict you – he owns the house as much as your mother.
  • Your father need not evict you, he can sell the flat (with your mom’s consent), end of story.
Also assuming that he has supported you thus far and you are over 21 yrs of age.
