In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, clashes on the road are not uncommon. One such incident, however, took an unexpected turn when a traffic-related dispute escalated into a physical altercation involving a 56-year-old businessman, his son, and a 20-year-old motorcyclist.
The Genesis of the Dispute
According to The Straits Times, Azharin Abas, a 56-year-old entrepreneur running an air-conditioner servicing business, found himself entangled in a dispute with Muhammad Khair Farish Khalid, a 20-year-old motorcyclist. The confrontation originated from a traffic incident in Bedok North Avenue 1 on July 15, at around 4 pm.
As Khair attempted to make a right turn into a car park, Azharin, in his van, sounded the horn. This seemingly innocuous act set the stage for a sequence of events that would lead to fines and legal repercussions for those involved.
The Verbal Exchange
Following the honking, Azharin claimed that Khair, in response, gestured provocatively. Azharin, curious about Khair’s riding style, engaged in a verbal exchange in Malay, questioning, “Macam mana kau naik motor?” or “How do you ride your bike?”
The situation escalated when Khair parked his motorcycle and noticed that Azharin had followed him. Azharin, accompanied by his son Azhani, decided to confront Khair in the car park.
From Words to Fists: Escalation of the Confrontation
The confrontation turned physical as Azharin accused Khair of riding dangerously and questioned if he wished to die. A verbal dispute ensued, drawing Azhani into the mix. Khair allegedly responded with an obscene word, triggering a series of punches exchanged among the trio.
A passerby intervened, putting an end to the altercation. Khair sought medical attention, revealing bruises on his face and chest. Azharin and Azhani, on the other hand, claimed minimal injuries and did not seek medical help.
Legal Ramifications
In the aftermath, Azharin faced legal consequences and was fined $2,500 after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace by fighting in a public place. His son, Azhani, also admitted to a similar charge and was fined $1,000. The legal proceedings against Khair are pending.
