HUSBAND SAYS DRIVER WAS ‘REMORSEFUL AND GUILTY’ AFTER FATAL CHINATOWN CRASH INVOLVING SIX-YEAR-OLD
The husband of a woman involved in a fatal traffic accident in Chinatown has said that his wife was deeply remorseful and overwhelmed with guilt following the incident, which claimed the life of a six-year-old girl. The crash took place at a carpark near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple along South Bridge Road and has sparked widespread public attention due to disturbing videos and eyewitness accounts circulating online.
Police were alerted to the accident shortly before noon. Two female pedestrians, aged six and 31, were conscious when they were taken to hospital. The child later succumbed to her injuries. The 38-year-old female driver remains under investigation and is currently assisting the authorities.
When reporters visited the scene later that day, the driver was seen visibly distressed, pacing near the area and holding her head in her hands. She was later escorted away by police officers. Her husband, who spoke to the media, said the incident had left the entire family traumatised.
DRIVER SAID TO HAVE IMMEDIATELY CHECKED ON VICTIMS
According to the husband, his wife has more than a decade of driving experience and had been in the area to pick up their six-year-old son when the accident occurred. He said she was inconsolable when she called him, crying and expressing deep concern for the victims.
He added that she immediately alighted from the vehicle to check on the injured pedestrians and called for an ambulance. Their son, who was in the car at the time, was reportedly shocked and broke down in tears after witnessing the aftermath.
The husband reiterated that his wife felt immense guilt over what had happened, describing her as “very remorseful” and emotionally devastated by the tragedy. The family has not made further public statements since.
EYEWITNESSES DESCRIBE CHAOTIC SCENE AFTER IMPACT
Several eyewitnesses recounted that the vehicle had struck the pedestrians while turning out of the carpark. One witness said the mother and daughter were knocked down as they appeared to be crossing the road, with the child ending up beneath the car.
Members of the public rushed forward to help, with some attempting to stop the bleeding while others shielded the victims from the sun. Two ambulances arrived within minutes and conveyed both victims to Singapore General Hospital.
Videos from the scene showed a man cradling the injured child and pleading for help, while paramedics were later seen performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The visuals have raised renewed discussions about road safety, driver vigilance in crowded urban areas, and pedestrian protection near tourist hotspots.
As investigations continue, the case has drawn attention to broader concerns such as accident liability, traffic safety enforcement, and the importance of careful driving in busy districts. Authorities have not released further details, and no charges have been announced at this stage.
