FILIPINO WOMAN DATING S’PORE GUY, SICK OF PEOPLE THINKING SHE IS HIS MAID

Filipina with a Singaporean boyfriend

As the title implies, I’m a Filipina with a Singaporean boyfriend and currently staying with him for a few weeks. Is it really common to view Filipinas as maids here?

Just felt bad earlier when we were outside and bf bought water for me at the stall and this auntie said,”Not your maid?” Because he opened the water bottle for me and wiped my sweaty forehead.

Netizens’ comments

  1. Among the older folks, yes, as that’s probably the only context that they’ve interacted with Filipinas. Or maybe nurses and entertainers as well.
Younger folks would have had more interactions with Filipinos in the workplace as there’s been a big increase in PMETs from the Philippines in the last 10+ (?) years.
  2. Sorry to hear that you have experienced that OP and I hope you don’t let it get to you. Understandably, the older generation typically equate Filipinas as domestic helpers due to the times they were brought up in. I’d think that the landscape has shifted for Filipinas and many of them are now working in healthcare/office jobs (at least based from my observations). Perhaps it’s also less common for a Singaporean to be dating a Filipina (disclaimer again as I may be wrong) as well hence the quick generalisation. But ultimately hope you don’t take it to heart, ignore the commentaries from others and just enjoy your time together 🙂
  3. This is just unfortunate and rude. I have colleagues who are from the Philippines, naturally I don’t assume every Filipina are domestic helpers.
  4. Definitely toxic asf to think that if Youre filipino you must be a maid, we have many filipinos who live, study and work here. Just some people with old toxic mindsets. Sure there are filipino helpers but there are many helpers of other ethnicities too
