[Fire @ Blk 451 Yishun Ring Road]
At about 9:50 a.m., SCDF was alerted to a fire in a 5th floor unit at the abovementioned location.
Upon arrival, the fire was raging inside the unit. SCDF firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets, entered the smoke-logged unit to conduct firefighting and rescue operations. The fire, which involved contents of the living room and a part of the kitchen, was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet.
SCDF rescued five persons from the bedrooms of the affected unit. They were assessed by SCDF paramedics for smoke inhalation, of which two persons also sustained minor burn injuries. All five persons were conveyed by SCDF ambulances to the Singapore General Hospital.
Hamsters found in multiple pet cages in the service yard of the affected unit were also brought out to safety.
Approximately 100 residents from 3rd to 7th floors were evacuated by the Police as a precautionary measure.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the fire had likely originated from the battery pack of a Power Assisted Bicycle (PAB) in the living room.
SCDF would like to remind the public on the prevention of PMD/PAB fires, including not to charge batteries for an extended period of time or overnight. Do not purchase or use non-original batteries. See the accompanying infographic for more fire safety tips.
We understand that a nearby resident had attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher prior to SCDF’s arrival. We will be in touch with him to commend him for his public spiritedness act.
