FOREIGN WORKER KILLED AFTER BEING CRUSHED BETWEEN BUS AND PILLAR @ KRANJI

A 43-year-old Chinese national working as a driver died after being trapped by a pass against a pillar at a bus interchange at Kranji.

The fatal workplace accident happened on 3 August at about 11am, and took place at 60 Jalan Lam Huat in Kranji, according to the Ministry of Manpower.

The worker’s death makes it the 32nd workplace fatality so far this year, with 4 more months to go.

The deceased was guiding a bus into position next to a pillar at the bus interchange at the time, and he ended up being crushed against the pillar by the bus.

He was subsequently sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

According to MOM, the parking space for the bus was occupied by ComfortDelGro Bus, and the employer of the worker is Singapore Towing Equipments.

MOM has ordered the employer to stop all their vehicle towing from non-public roads and building premises while the accident is under investigation.

They clarified that employers and supervisors must conduct safety assessments and ensure that their workers are aware of the safety measures required during the guiding of vehicle’s movements in tight spaces.

They added that traffic management plans must also be in place, with clearly demarcated parking areas and the use of humps, convex mirrors and signs to manage blind spots.
