Am I actually best friends with this guy and should I be his best man?
So I must clarify that I’m not great at social things. I’m very likely on the autism spectrum and I don’t have many people to discuss this with because I keep to myself a lot.
There was this WhatsApp chat group with my class a few years back and we have since graduated from secondary school, and that it’s died since then. But three years ago, I get a notification from it. For reasons of his own, M, a classmate I was never really close to, messaged the chat. Apparently he had no where to live for the night and was just asking every chat he had for help.
I asked my parents if we could go get him since we have a guest room, and they agreed. So I called M and said I’m coming with my parents. He gave us his location and we picked him up.
Long story short, he was kicked out of his house and didn’t have anything except what he brought out. So anyway, my parents discussed and for the next few months, M stayed with us. We managed to get things for him.
He’s also a nice guy and helped us too, but he and I don’t really share interests. So when we talk, I just answer questions and tell him what I do. Then he shares his day.
He managed to get onto his feet and stuff and a few years later he managed to move out and eventually found someone. I’m quite happy for him. Although we didn’t talk much but sometimes he still comes over for dinner, or asks me out to chill.
I know he’s quite grateful for my family helping him in his time of need.
He’s getting married soon and has asked me to be his best man. I’m not sure if I should say yes because I see how he interacts with other friends, and how he interacts with me is different. I don’t have that bond with him that he has with others so I’m not sure if he asks me because he feels obligated to from my family helping him out years ago. Or he genuinely thinks I’m his best friend?
I did ask him, he just laughed and said that whatever I decide he’s okay with it. But that’s not really an answer.
Um… so I don’t know. Should I say yes or no? And I’m also not sure if I’m his best friend or not cause he also didn’t say yes or no.
