FT RENTS HDB ROOM FOR 6 MONTHS, CAN’T TAHAN ROOMMATE’S CURRY SMELL BUT CAN’T LEAVE

I rented a room without viewing in-person and now I want to bail.

I’ve recently signed a 6-month lease with a tenant that has agreed with the landlord to sublet me a room for the next 6 months. Because I was moving directly from overseas, I needed a place before I landed and hence didn’t get a chance to see it in person.

I’m 2 weeks into moving in and I find that as tolerant and patient as I am, the tenants do a lot of heaving cooking of curries and as a result, the smell has seeped into my room slowly. I’ve done the whole diffuser, thirsty hippo, air freshener etc but it’s to a point that it’s nauseous.

The tenants are truly nice people and I get along well. But how tf am I suppose to tell them to try and cook something else? Plus I won’t cos that’s shitty behaviour.

TL;DR Can I bail on my lease given the grounds that I can’t handle the smell?

  1. If you have a window, you could do positive pressure ventilation. Just a small fan blowing into the room from outside and seal the gap.
  2. Of course not. Especially if this is a HDB, because the minimum rental period for an HDB is 6 months. If people could bail for such lame reasons, it would be a loophole exploited by illegal Airbnbs.
    Even your subletting situation sounds pretty suspicious. Possibly if you can find a replacement, the subletter might agree?
    I’d recommend just coping. Buy one of those rubbery strips to seal the gap under your door. And thirsty hippos, only absorb water. Get a big box of baking sofa or bag of charcoal.
  3. How certain are you that the sublet has landlord permission? is it a HDB or condo?
