East Coast GRC MP Tan Kiat How, shared an online fundraiser that is raising money for the woman who lost her husband and 3-year-old daughter in the Bedok North fire that broke out last month.
The 34-year-old woman, Mrs Jenny Tan, requires about $100,000 to cover her medical fees, with Ray of Hope starting a fundraiser to help her raise the fees.
Here is what Tan Kiat How said
Since the 13th May fire at Block 409 Bedok North, I have received many messages from Singaporeans from all walks of life asking how they can help those affected. I am truly heartened by the strong support.
I would like to now appeal to your kindness and generosity to support one of the fire victims, Jenny, who was rescued from the fire. She’s the wife and mother of the man and 3-year old girl who sadly succumbed to their injuries.
Ray of Hope, a crowdfunding charity, has kindly stepped forward to help raise funds to cover Jenny’s medical and other related expenses.
Jenny was in ICU for 8 days after being rescued from the fire. She and her husband bravely tried to shield their daughter from the fire and had suffered from smoke inhalation and burns. Although her condition has since stabilised and moved to the general ward, she needs to undergo further treatment. She is finally conscious, but it’s observed that she’s not fully aware of and unable to respond to her surroundings yet. It will be a long and difficult road to recovery.
#KampongChaiChee volunteers and I have been keeping in close touch with Jenny’s family since the incident, providing support and assistance where we can. I am grateful to the Bedok Town Centre Merchants’ Association for helping Jenny’s family with accommodation and other arrangements while they were in Singapore.
We met Jenny’s parents and siblings on several occasions. They shared with us that Jenny came to Singapore 11 years ago, met and married her husband here. They had been living and working hard to build a life in Singapore. They even planned for their daughter to go to school here.
The tragedy changed all that. The family are now worried about Jenny’s chances of recovery, and also her emotional and mental well-being when she learns about her husband and daughter. They are also worried about how they could afford to pay for Jenny’s medical bills.
I sympathise with the family’s difficult and trying situation. Please do support the fund-raising efforts by Ray of Hope to help Jenny and her family, and give Jenny a chance to recover and get back on her feet.
