A Singaporean woman, Rachel Tay Pei Ting, had a disappointing experience when she used the GrabShare service for the first time on February 21, 2024. Rachel, 26, booked a GrabShare ride for S$28 and was surprised to find that a family of four had also joined the ride, making a total of six people in the car, including the driver. According to Grab’s website and mobile app, only two bookings are allowed per shared ride and the maximum number of passengers allowed per booking is one.
Rachel took to the Facebook page Complaint Singapore to express her frustration and question the legality of the situation. She wondered if it is legal for two people to sit together in the front-row passenger seat. According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), drivers found guilty of carrying passengers in a dangerous manner could be issued six demerit points and fined S$200.
Rachel reported the incident to Grab and the company has since apologized for the unpleasant encounter. A spokesperson from Grab Singapore stated that only one passenger is allowed per GrabShare booking and that there should only be a maximum of two passengers in a matched GrabShare ride. The family of four should not have booked a GrabShare ride in the first place. The spokesperson also reminded driver-partners that in the event that passengers choose the wrong service type, they can cancel the bookings without penalty.
The woman said:
Booked my first grabshare ride today and got to share a 5 seater grab car with 4 other passengers + driver + myself. Total 6 pax??
And the driver even told the 2 pax to sit in front together. Is this even legal?
1. Grabshare promised ONE other passenger, not a whole family of 4
2. Why didn’t the driver reject this family of 4? Even if the driver didn’t reject them, how can they fit in the car?
3. 2 pax illegal seating in the front seat
And 4 ppl take what grab share???
*other 4 passengers NOT DRIVER’S FAMILY*
The 4 passengers got on AFTER me, do I even have a choice to leave the car? I don’t even know where the driver pick them up
The grabshare is $28 fyi
