A video of a GetGo car mounting a kerb and hitting a lamppost in Punggol has been circulating online, prompting speculation about the cause of the incident. While some have suggested that the driver may have been sleeping or not paying attention, others have proposed a different theory – that the car’s brakes may have failed.
The undated video shows a Mazda 3 with the GetGo livery travelling north along Punggol Way towards the Punggol Field intersection. As the car passed under a pedestrian overhead bridge, its brake lights came on, but it did not appear to slow down. As it approached the stationary cars ahead, the car veered left, mounted the kerb, and hit a lamppost before coming to a halt.
Trying to brake but no brake

Commenters on Facebook have shared their suspicion that the car’s brakes may have failed, based on the fact that the car’s brake lights were on for at least 5 to 7 seconds before the car mounted the kerb. The distance between the pedestrian overhead bridge and the lamppost is about 100 metres, while the estimated braking distance of a car travelling at 60km/h is 27 metres, according to the highway code.
Gone case

If the car’s brakes did indeed fail, it would suggest that the driver took evasive action to prevent ramming into the vehicles ahead. However, it is important to note that this is only a theory, and further investigation is needed to determine the actual cause of the incident.
GetGo has not yet released a statement regarding the incident, but LTA has stated that it is aware of the video and is investigating the matter. In the meantime, the video serves as a reminder of the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and the dangers of driving with faulty equipment. It is crucial for all drivers to ensure that their vehicles are in good working condition before getting behind the wheel to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all road users.
