GEYLANG HIT AND RUN DRIVER ARRESTED, 21 Y.O MAN WITHOUT DRIVING LICENSE

A driver has been taken into custody following a hit-and-run incident in Geylang that resulted in serious injuries to a man and a woman. The accident, which took place on March 23, involved a 21-year-old driver who did not stop to assist the injured and allegedly fled the scene, according to The Straits Times (ST).

The driver is facing charges for driving without due care causing grievous hurt, driving without a valid driving license and insurance coverage, and taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. Additionally, the driver will be charged for failing to stop after an accident, failing to provide assistance to the injured, and moving the vehicle without a police officer’s authority.

The incident, which was captured on video and posted by the Facebook page “SG Road Vigilante,” shows two pedestrians crossing a four-lane street around 11:40 pm. As they reached the third lane, a black Hyundai traveling at high speed struck them head-on, causing one person to be thrown several meters forward and the other to the side. Both sustained heavy injuries and their belongings were scattered on the road. The car’s license plate was also knocked off in the impact.

The Straits Times reported that the driver will be charged today (Mar. 25) for the aforementioned offenses, which carry penalties such as fines up to S$1,000, imprisonment up to three months, or both. The police have reminded motorists that they are required to stop and render assistance in the event of an accident, and that leaving the scene without rendering assistance is an offense.

This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and adhering to traffic rules to ensure the safety of all road users. The police are continuing their investigations into the matter.
