A violent confrontation broke out in Geylang on Friday (29 August) when a late-night supper ended in bloodshed. A 51-year-old man, who was enjoying a meal at a restaurant along Lorong 25A Geylang, was allegedly attacked by two men armed with kitchen choppers. The incident left a trail of blood stretching nearly 100 metres and sparked a swift police operation that saw the suspects arrested within five hours, reported Shin Min Daily News.
The attack took place around 5am outside a small eatery. Witnesses reported seeing the older man, referred to as “uncle”, finishing his food before two younger men, aged 24 and 26, approached his table. Moments later, all three stepped out to the street, where the argument turned violent.
According to staff members, one of the youths suddenly raised a chopper and swung it at the victim. The uncle tried to shield himself with his arm but suffered deep injuries. Bleeding heavily, he ran down the road while shouting for help, with the assailants chasing him and waving their weapons.
Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene
Residents and workers in the area said the scene was “terrifying”. One shop employee recalled arriving in the early morning to find the victim lying on the pavement, surrounded by police and paramedics. He was conscious but badly wounded and was rushed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for urgent treatment.
Investigators later found bloodstains on walls, roads and walkways leading from the restaurant all the way to Sims Avenue, where the victim had collapsed. Several bags of evidence were collected, and multiple police cars were deployed to secure the area.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that one injured person was conveyed to hospital. Police said the victim sustained severe wrist injuries, including torn nerves, arteries and tendons in three fingers.
Suspects Face Severe Penalties
Thanks to CCTV footage and rapid follow-up, officers managed to track down and arrest the two suspects within five hours of the incident. Both men were charged in court on Saturday (30 August) with voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons.
If convicted, the pair face up to life imprisonment, or a jail term of up to 15 years, along with possible fines and caning.
The case has shocked the Geylang community, where disputes occasionally break out but seldom escalate to such brutality. Many residents expressed concern over safety in the area and called for greater vigilance.
Police investigations are ongoing.
