Girl, 17, Admits to Injuring Two School Staff With Knife After Phone Was Confiscated

A 17-year-old secondary school student in Singapore has pleaded guilty to two charges of voluntarily causing hurt with a sharp object after an incident involving school staff escalated into violence. The case has drawn public attention to student discipline, school safety, and the pressures faced by youths in academic environments.

The teenager admitted to using a penknife to injure two staff members at her school after her mobile phone was confiscated as a disciplinary measure. Both victims sustained cuts to their arms and later sought medical treatment. One of them required hospital care, though their injuries were not life-threatening.

Due to the girl being under 18 years old at the time of the offence, a gag order remains in place to protect her identity. Court proceedings confirmed that the incident occurred at a local secondary school during the school day.

How the School Incident Unfolded

On the morning of the incident, the student reportedly arrived late for classes at around 7.45am. As part of school rules, her mobile phone was confiscated by the operations manager, a common disciplinary response in Singapore schools aimed at enforcing punctuality and focus during lessons.

Several hours later, during the lunch break, the student approached the operations manager in an attempt to retrieve her phone. When her request was denied, the situation took a disturbing turn. She allegedly produced a penknife and first inflicted a cut on her own arm before turning the weapon on the staff member, injuring his left arm.

The operations manager then instructed the student to wait outside the administration office while he informed the discipline master about what had occurred. At that point, the matter was treated as a serious safety concern rather than a routine disciplinary issue.

Second Staff Member Injured During Intervention

When the discipline master attempted to de-escalate the situation and persuade the student to surrender the penknife, she became increasingly agitated. Despite efforts to calm her down, she refused to comply with instructions.

The confrontation escalated further when the student used the penknife to slash the discipline master’s left arm, causing a deep wound. The incident occurred while he was calling another staff member for assistance, highlighting the speed at which the situation spiralled out of control.

Another school staff member eventually intervened and managed to disarm the student. The girl subsequently left the school premises. Police were alerted shortly after, and she was arrested at her home later that same day.

Legal Proceedings and Broader Concerns

Both injured staff members sought medical attention, with the discipline master taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for treatment. The case has since been adjourned, with sentencing scheduled for a later date.

The incident has sparked renewed discussion around school discipline policies, student mental health, and the handling of confiscated personal devices. While mobile phone restrictions are common across Singapore’s education system, experts note the importance of early intervention when students show signs of emotional distress or extreme reactions.

Authorities and educators continue to stress that schools remain safe environments, but cases like this underline the need for vigilance, staff training, and access to counselling support for students struggling to cope with disciplinary actions.
