I recently had an employee who joined my team without having the need to go through the many rounds of interview that a normal job applicant to my company would need to go through.
For context, the company which I am working at is one of the more prestigious bank in the world and it is quite hard to get a job here.
Got in through her father’s connections with some higher ups in the bank
This new employee, lets call her G to make it easier, has a father who is also in the banking industry for a decade or so.
He has made a name for himself and has connections with a lot of higher ups in a lot of banks.
So naturally when G wanted to enter the banking industry, her father tried to pave a way for her by asking one of our higher ups if he could arrange for a position for G.
Always late for work and always ask for WFH
The first day G was supposed to report for work, she was already late by over an hour.
You could smell from her clothes that she had been to a club as the smoke smell was still very pungent.
She was apologetic when she arrived late and had a good attitude which I was pleased with so I ignored the fact that she was late and tried to get her settled down.
It was also probably because she was introduced into the position by one of the higher ups which was why I did not dare to go so hard on her.
However, I quickly became frustrated with her.
She was always late for work by an hour or two, and she always asked to work from home because she did not want to come to the office.
She would also constantly take long toilet and lunch breaks and would always be on her phone chatting with people and playing Mobile Legends.
This made me couldn’t help but think that she only got the job because of her father’s connections with a higher up in the bank.
Decided to talk to her to try to help her improve
One day, I decided to confront her about her lack of punctuality. I asked her why she was always late and why she always wanted to work from home.
She gave excuses like her house is very far from the office and it always jams on the way to the office.
She also always uses her father’s and the higher up in the bank’s name as an excuse.
She would say that she went drinking with her dad and the bank higher up which was why sometimes she cannot wake up on time.
I was speechless but I told her that I understood, but that I still expected her to be on time and to be present at the office.
Ignored my advice
Unfortunately, my words had little effect on G. She continued to be late and to ask to work from home, sometimes not even informing me about wanting to work from home.
I would only find out about it when the higher up in the bank gave me a WhatsApp message to let me know that her father told him that her daughter had to work from home that day for a particular reason.
Eventually, word about her behaviour and attitude spread throughout the bank’s office and it soon reached the ears of the higher up.
He addressed us to stop spreading the rumours and said that he would speak to G and her dad to see what can be done.
We never ever saw G after that day.
