GRAB DRIVER DROVE AGAINST TRAFFIC, BEATS RED LIGHT, HITS PEDESTRIANS – JAILED

A 46-year-old Grab driver, Michael Chua, pleaded guilty to 2 counts of dangerous driving and was jailed 9 weeks on 6 April, as well as being banned from driving for 3.5 years.

What happened?

Chua was driving along Circuit Road on 9 August 2020 to pick up a customer, and he then made a wrong turn into a carpark.

He then reversed his vehicle into the three-lane road behind him, against the traffic flow, and ended up hitting 2 pedestrians aged 60 and 62.

The two victims, who are sisters, were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, with the 62-year-old experiencing stiffness in her left wrist and pain in her thumb for 4 weeks after the accident.

She was given 57 days hospitalisation leave.

Her latest and last visit to the hospital on 18 March 2021, found that her injury is likely to be permanent, and she was unable to straighten her left thumb completely.

The 60-year-old victim, on the other hand, suffered abrasions on her ankle and elbow and was given 90 days hospitalisation leave.

In another incident on 31 August 2020, Chua was driving along North Buona Vista Road when he beat a red light and hit a car that was trying to make a right turn.

Chua then got out of his car and spoke to the other driver, who is a 43-year-oild woman, but he then refused to provide his details to her.

He told the woman to claim her own insurance and settle it herself, and he then took photos of the scene before driving away.
