PHV drivers, do they earn a lot?

So my secondary sch friend was telling me he’s drives grab and fetch around 5-6k monthly. He was telling me he drives 8-9hr daily and only farm for peak hours. I’m quite impressed but I don’t know if he’s capping.

Yesterday night I took grab home and had a conversation with my driver, he was telling me most of the driver definitely earns more than 4k and above even with minimal effort.

He also share with me that driving grab is just merely a side hustle. As quite a lot of them owns a business or having side hustle outside.

“Many of them enjoys driving grab because of the freedom and decent payout compared to office job, I have car and I earn whenever I feel like. And the pay is above average singaporeans.”

I’m just quite impressed on the payout, really something to be look upon.

Netizens’ comments

  1. Had a friend quit his job and try to do PHV full-time because he said he likes the flexibility of being a PHV driver. 3 months later he returned the car and is now back to looking for work. He didn’t wanna say but obviously he wasn’t making ‘big bucks’ as what you heard. If you add your bonus, AWS, employer CPF, AL, FCL, MC and other staff benefits you’d have to hustle really hard to make the equivalent amount.
  2. Only farms peak hours, but peak hours dont last 8 to 9 hours bro
  3. 5-6k monthly sounds a lot, but how much of that goes on the car payments, petrol, insurance etc?
  4. It depends on the definition of “a lot”
5-6k monthly for 8-9 hours sounds good on paper, but, you do not get CPF, and 5 years down the road, you are only a grab driver. what other skills you learn other than driving on the road?
The reasoning of “freedon and decent payout” is true, but if you are a young chap, you have a better ROI if you sort out the kind of career path you want, and be specialized in a legimate skill.
