The brother of a Grabfood rider who was involved in a serious accident which saw him admitted into the ICU for 10 days, has taken to social media to appeal to the public for assistance.
He wrote that they are a family of 3, and that his brother, Mohammed Ali, is the youngest son raised by their single father.
Their father had suffered a stroke and lost his job during the pandemic, and that he can’t get re-employed due to his ailing health and age.
He wrote that Ali was an active young boy who just graduated from ITE and was waiting for his NS enlistment.
While waiting, Ali worked as a part time bicycle rider to help his family out, pay for his basic necessities, his bike license and to h ave some savings for his NS.
On 10 April, at around 8.36pm, Ali was delivering a Grabfood order to the customer when he got into an accident along Toh Guan Road, towards Bukit Batok.
Ali suffered multiple injuries and was admitted into the ICU for 10 days, where he was in a coma for 7 days.
Because the impact to his head was tremendous, Ali’s bleeding brain was shifted to one side of his skull, and he needed a very critical brain surgery.
Surgeons had to perform a craniectomy, a surgery to remove a part of his skull to release pressure from his head and get rid of the blood clots inside his brain, in order to save his life.
Ali also had 3 of his major veins in his right hand severed from the accident, snapping his artery, tendons and nerve vessels.
He also suffered broken ribs, hips, spine and shin (left).
Ali was transferred to a surgical neuro ward after his successful brain surgery and the hospital bills have since skyrocketed to about S$100,000 and is still increasing.
The neurosurgeon also recommended cranioplasty, to replace Ali’s removed skull with a new artificial one that about $15K to $30K, including the surgery.
