Facebook user Desmond Ang, shared a “bright” idea that popped into his head about solving the HDB shortage issues.
In his suggestion, Ang proposes that couples who do not have kids can only buy 3 room flats, while those who buy 4 room flats should be given 2 years to have kids.
If not, he says, the government should take back their 4 room flats and downgrade them to a 3 room flat to live in and refund them the money.
On couple who are not able to conceive, Ang suggests a 2 year extension where they will need to “show evidence” that they are trying to have kids.
Here is what he said
To solve hdb shortage issues. I propose that couples who do not have kids can only buy 3 room bto.
For couples who buy 4 room and above, they are given 2 years to have kids, if not government will take back their hdb and give them a 3 room hdb to stay.
Government will refund them base on pro-rated amount. Eg they bought a 5 room bto for 500k. Now government take back and give them 3 room hdb. They will be refunded 500k divide by 5 rooms x 2 rooms = 200k.
For couples who are unable to conceive. They will be given a 2 years extension but they need to show evidence to the government that they are trying to have kids by showing they are going for ivf etc.
These 2 years extension can be renewed if they can continue to show they are still trying to have kids such as providing evidence of ongoing ivf treatment etc.
