I am a parent of a son who has depression and anxiety disorders. He wasn’t able to complete his O levels due to this illness and he’s very good with his maths and sciences. This illness robbed him of a continuing education. Reading about the guy who planned his psychiatric “geng” mental health just to get into Pes F sickens my stomach. He is a disgrace!!!!
My son opted to enlist earlier and was granted Pes E. Now he is struggling after BMT as his depression and attacks worsened and psychiatrist upped his meds. It is a major struggle for people who have this debilitating disease and also for their caregivers. I sincerely hope that psychiatrists and psychologists can differentiate between the “chao geng” and genuine cases.
I am giving the best support to my son, encouraging him to continue with his army stint if he is able to, but if he cannot, I am not going to force him and land up with “no” son by losing him forever to sui****.
I know how he feels because I’m suffering from major depression and anxiety attacks too. It’s hereditary, my dad has it too. So it’s 3 generations for us. People who think that depression is all in the mind, please go and read up before you tell a depressed person to snap out of it… cos they can’t. It’s like telling someone who has diabetes to will it to go away and do away with their meds. If only it were that simple…
To all who suffer from psychiatric problems – know that you are not alone. Jia yu.
