A patient who caught the Omicron variant of the virus in the United Kingdom (UK) has become the first fatality of the variant in the country.
This was confirmed by the Prime Minister of the UK, Boris Johnson as he spoke to reporters.
Mr Johnson added that the initial idea that the Omicron variant of the virus is just a milder version is something that they will have to leave aside for now, and they will have to look at the rate which the virus is spreading through the population in the UK.
Stricter restrictions
Ever since the first cases of Omicron were detected in the UK on 27 Nov, Mr Johnson has set tougher restrictions, urging people in the UK to go for their booster shots so as to prevent causing a strain on UK’s healthcare system.
Spreading rapidly
Health Secretary of the UK, Sajid Javid, has also said that the Omicron variant of the virus is spreading at a rate that was phenomenal as the Omicron variant currently makes up about 40% of confirmed cases in London.
