The rental market is booming, even for rental rooms with ridiculously strict restrictions, there are apparently still keen rentees snatching up the listings.
A TikTok page @sgniceproperty shared a HDB room that was listed for rent at $1,200 per month, which is more expensive than the average rental price for other similar listings.
The rental room at a HDB unit in Toa Payoh came with a myriad of restrictions, including charges for turning on the air conditioner.
The landlord is also charging for utilities, and there is no cooking allowed. Clothes can also only be washed once a month and the tenant has to clean the house for the landlord.
The netizen added that the listing is “Just like staying in prison but you get to pay rent. Come experience controlled living at a very cheap cheap rate, with high levels of restrictions, and be thankful to pay S$1,200 only. So so damn cheap.”
The property agent who put up the listing, Arun Kumar, spoke to Mothership and said that the utility bills for the unit would be split among the tenant and the landlord.
Despite the public outcry online against the ridiculous restrictions, Arun said that the rental room was rented out within a day of the first viewing.
He said that there were about 18 groups of prospective rentees who viewed the unit, and some of them even offered to pay more than the $1,200 listing price, including a family of three who offered $1,500.
The room was eventually rented out to a couple of female Malaysian S-Pass holders.
