HONG KONG PRINCIPAL WHO GOT FIRED HIRES LAWYER TO DEFEND HIS EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS

Hong Kong Principal Fired Immediately After Singapore Bus Incident, Seeks Legal Advice

A Hong Kong secondary school principal who became embroiled in a widely publicised dispute involving a tour bus in Singapore has expressed shock over his dismissal, saying he did not expect the school to terminate his employment with immediate effect.

Lee Cheuk Hing, who previously announced his intention to resign following the controversy, released a statement on 6 June stating that he was “highly surprised and full of regret” over the decision taken by the school’s management committee.

The incident gained widespread attention after videos circulated online showing Lee involved in a heated confrontation during a school trip in Singapore. The footage sparked criticism on social media and prompted scrutiny from both the public and education authorities in Hong Kong.

School Rejected Resignation, Chose Immediate Dismissal

According to reports, Lee had initially submitted a resignation letter requesting that his final day of service be 31 August. However, the school’s management committee decided not to accept the resignation arrangement and instead terminated his employment immediately.

In a statement explaining its decision, the school said allowing Lee to remain in his role would severely affect normal school operations and hinder efforts by teachers and students to move forward from the incident.

The committee also pointed to what it described as inappropriate and vulgar behaviour that was inconsistent with the standards expected of educational professionals.

The school concluded that an immediate dismissal was necessary to safeguard its reputation and maintain confidence among students, parents and staff.

Principal Says He Respects Decision

Responding to the termination, Lee said he respected the school’s decision despite being caught off guard by the outcome.

He revealed that he had appointed legal representatives to review matters relating to his employment contract and to protect his rights and interests.

While defending his original intentions, Lee reiterated that his actions were motivated by concerns for the safety and wellbeing of students under his care during the Singapore trip.

However, he acknowledged that good intentions did not excuse his conduct and admitted that his behaviour had fallen short of expectations.

Issues Tearful Apology

Lee once again apologised publicly, saying the controversy had brought significant pressure and governance challenges to the school.

He admitted that his actions had caused distress to the institution and the wider community, adding that the episode would remain a lifelong lesson for him.

The case has continued to attract attention in both Hong Kong and Singapore, with many observers closely watching whether any legal action or employment dispute will emerge following the principal’s dismissal.

At present, Lee’s legal representatives are reportedly reviewing the circumstances surrounding the termination, while the school appears determined to draw a line under the controversy and focus on normal operations moving forward.
