HSA Warns Against Illegal Fat Loss Injectable Peptides Sold Online For As Low As S$80

Singapore residents tempted by so-called “fat loss injections” or “muscle-building peptides” advertised on social media are being urged to reconsider, after the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) issued a strong warning over unregistered injectable peptides circulating online.

These products, often marketed aggressively on TikTok, Telegram and WhatsApp groups, are being promoted as fast-track solutions for weight loss, anti-ageing and muscle gain. Some listings claim dramatic transformations within weeks, with prices reportedly starting from as low as S$80 per vial.

However, HSA has stressed that in Singapore, injectable peptides are classified as prescription-only medicines. This means they must be prescribed and supplied by a licensed doctor. Any online sale by unauthorised sellers is illegal, regardless of how convincing the marketing claims may appear.

Experts Raise Concerns Over Safety & Long-Term Health Risks

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can influence various bodily functions, including hormone regulation and metabolism. While certain peptide-based medications are approved for legitimate medical conditions, products sold through unofficial online channels carry significant risks.

Medical professionals warn that consumers purchasing these substances from unknown sources have no assurance of product quality, sterility or correct dosage. Without proper clinical oversight, users may unknowingly expose themselves to serious complications.

Among the potential risks highlighted are hormonal imbalances that disrupt the body’s natural systems, organ strain affecting the liver and kidneys, and broader metabolic issues that could lead to chronic health problems. Unlike regulated medical treatments, black-market injectables may contain incorrect concentrations, contaminants or entirely different substances from what is stated on the label.

Local fitness trainers have reportedly observed growing curiosity among gym-goers. Some estimate that a substantial number of clients now ask about peptides as part of their weight management or muscle-building plans. Yet doctors caution that there is no guaranteed shortcut when it comes to sustainable fat loss or performance enhancement.

Authorities Step Up Enforcement As Black Market Persists

HSA has indicated that it is actively working to identify and remove illegal listings. Enforcement efforts include monitoring online platforms and taking action against sellers who breach pharmaceutical regulations. Offenders found supplying unregistered health products can face fines and imprisonment under Singapore law.

Despite these measures, the online black market remains difficult to eliminate completely, especially when sellers shift between private messaging apps and closed groups. This makes consumer awareness even more critical.

Health professionals emphasise that individuals seeking medical weight loss solutions, hormone therapy or performance-related treatments should consult a registered healthcare practitioner. A proper medical assessment can determine whether a legitimate, evidence-based treatment is suitable and safe.

While the promise of rapid results may be appealing, experts reiterate that injectable substances purchased from unofficial sources could cost far more than their S$80 price tag — particularly if long-term health complications arise.
