On the morning of Tuesday, September 5th, a huge fire broke out along the West Coast Highway, blocking off 2 lanes on the road.
The Inferno Unleashed
Social media became ablaze with footage of the incident, revealing the magnitude of the fire that engulfed the entire front of the mobile crane, with thick black smoke billowing into the sky.
One TikTok video, captured from the perspective of a passerby in a lorry, offered a glimpse into the unfolding disaster.
As the camera drew nearer, it became painfully evident that the fire had ravaged the crane beyond recognition. The fire had burned the front half of the mobile crane and melted that portion into an unrecognisable wreck, with the driver’s seat charred into an unrecognizable shell.
The Heroic Response
Promptly responding to the scene, SCDF firefighters began combating the raging flames. In another video posted on Facebook, they could be seen in action, utilizing hoses from a firetruck to combat the inferno.
The firefighting operation was so intense that it necessitated the closure of two entire lanes on the road. Traffic came to a standstill, with only one lane slowly allowing vehicles to pass. On the opposite road, the firetruck commandeered a lane, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
It took several minutes, but the firefighters eventually gained the upper hand. As the flames subsided, a white powder, presumably from their dampening efforts, blanketed the road.
Miraculously, No Injuries Reported
The SCDF confirmed that they received an alert about the fire near 71 West Coast Highway at approximately 7:30 a.m. on that Tuesday morning. The fire involved a crane truck, and the firefighters, with their water jets, managed to quell the blazing tempest.
Amidst the chaos and destruction, there were no reported injuries. Investigations into the fire are currently underway.
