HUSBAND SECRETLY WENT FOR PLASTIC SURGERY, SPENT $4K ON IT INSTEAD OF BILLS

I’m 33, and for the last few years, I’ve been the sole breadwinner while my husband, 31, pursues his degree full-time. Between the mortgage on our HDB, the rising GST, and the general cost of living here, things haven’t exactly been breezy. I’ve been meticulous with our budget, often skipping the little luxuries I want so we can stay ahead of the bills.

The “slip-up” happened over weekend kopi. I was mentioning how I’d eventually like to look into some minor aesthetic treatments once he graduates and starts working. Without thinking, he piped up with a specific detail about CoolSculpting recovery. When I looked at him, confused, his face went pale. He tried to backtrack, but the damage was done. He eventually admitted he’d spent $4,000 on several sessions a few months ago.

I don’t have a moral issue with cosmetic procedures. If he wanted to tweak his appearance, that’s his choice. But the “how” and the “when” of this are what’s keeping me up at night:

  • The Financial Betrayal: $4k isn’t pocket change. While I’m over here calculating our CPF contributions and making sure the utilities are paid, he managed to find a lump sum for a vanity project. It feels incredibly lopsided to carry the “needs” of the household while he secretly funds the “wants.”
  • The Calculated Secrecy: We live in a small space. How did he coordinate multiple appointments at a clinic in Orchard or Novena without me noticing? He had to have planned the “recovery” time and the excuses for where he was. If he can hide a $4,000 medical procedure for months, what else can be tucked away?
  • The Omission: He didn’t just forget to mention it; he actively chose not to tell me, likely because he knew how it would look given our current financial arrangement.

I feel like a “bank” rather than a partner. I’m struggling to bridge the gap between the man I thought was my teammate and the man who kept a secret file on his own life while I paid for his seat at the table.
