Allegedly, a screenshot making its rounds on social media, showing a message from Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) to its JC1 and JC2 students, asking them to “refrain posting or re-posting anything pertaining to the Singapore General Elections 2020 (GE2020).

The message stated that if students failed to comply, disciplinary actions will be taken.

The rationale behind their decision is because the context behind many posts “tend to be complex and nuanced”.

Ironically, the message has sparked exactly what the school had hoped against, with a post about the message getting over a thousand shares on the Facebook page of local activist and journalist Kirsten Han.

HCI has yet to respond to media enquiries.
