India’s ministry of defence said in a statement that they accidentally fired a missile into Pakistan, citing a technical malfunction during a maintenance.
They said in their statement:
“On 9 March 2022, in the course of a routine maintenance, a technical malfunction led to the accidental firing of a missile.
It is learnt that the missile landed in an area of Pakistan. While the incident is deeply regrettable, it is also a matter of relief that there has been no loss of life due to the accident.”
India’s envoy was summoned by Pakistan and gave their version of events about the incident, with the Indian ministry saying that the government is taking a serious view and orders a high-level court of enquiry.
A spokesperson for the Pakistani military spoke to the media, saying that a “high-speed flying object” had crashed into eastern Pakistan on Thursday evening.
The object had flown 124km into Pakistani airspace at 40,000 feet and 3 times the speed of sound.
India was warned by Pakistan to take effective measures to avoid the recurrence of such violations and to be mindful of the unpleasant consequences of such negligence.
