The India variant of the Covid-19 virus (or “Delta variant” after being renamed) has mutated further to become the “Delta plus” variant.
The new variant has shown to be more contagious than its predecessor, and has been found in 16 cases in Maharashtra, India.
India has since declared the new India variant to be a “variant of concern”.
The country saw 50,848 new infections over the past 24 hours, with their total number of Covid-19 cases crossing the 30 million mark.
India is currently the world’s largest vaccine producer, however, their vaccination efforts so far have seen only 5.5% of 950 million eligible people being vaccinated.
Their healthcare system is overworked and overwhelmed, with hundreds of thousands dying during their second wave of infections back in April-May.
