Karuppiah Jeyakkumar, a 44-year-old Indian national and a Singapore PR, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing grievous hurt and was sentenced yesterday to 9 months of imprisonment.
He was also ordered to compensate the victim $315.70.
He had used an umbrella to assault a distant relative of his in a fit of rage, until the umbrella broke – the victim, Mr Alangam Pillai Rajendran, 55-years-old, required extensive surgery to repair the severe injuries inflicted onto his right eye.
The victim had his vision in his right eye reduced for a significant amount of time.
What happened?
The victim’s wife owned a provision shop in Clementi which the attacker, Karuppiah had contributed money to set up, but he was not registered as a co-owner.
The victim and his wife told Karuppiah that they wanted to sell the shop and share the money with him.
But Karuppiah wanted them to sell it to him instead, with the parties failing to come to an agreement.
On 2 October 2017, the victim met a potential buyer at around 8.45pm outside the shop.
Karuppiah show up a few minutes later because he was supposed to hand over the account book and the shop keys to the victim.
He then got agitated when he saw the victim and the potential buyer.
Karuppiah then used an umbrella and slipper and assaulted the victim, he then chased him away.
The police were called in by the potential buyer and the victim then took a cab to the West Coast Neighbourhood Police Post.
He was then conveyed to NUH in an ambulance.
The victim had suffered an injury to his right eye.
Karuppiah is currently out on $10,000 bail and was ordered to surrender himself on 5 November at the State Courts to begin his jail sentence.
