An Indonesian businessman Bachtiar Karim gave Singapore badminton player Loh Kean Yew a lump sum of $200,000 through his family’s charity arm, the Karim Family Foundation.
The family explained that they were inspired by Loh’s “perseverance and humility” following his history-making win at the MWF World Championships last month.
The family is hoping that their monetary donation will help to inspire future Loh Kean Yews.
The Karim family are ranked 10th on the list of Forbes’ 2021 Top 50 Richest Indonesians, and they are worth US$3.5 billion.
Bachtiar Karim is the head of Musim Mas group, which is one of the biggest palm oil entities in the world, with their business HQ located in Singapore.
