A Malaysian tourist who sparked backlash online after making derogatory remarks about locals in China has now been identified as a serving police officer, with authorities confirming that disciplinary proceedings are underway.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated widely on social media showing the woman, identified as Nur Asyiqin binti Mohd Dalil, making comments about unpleasant smells while queueing for a bus during her trip. The clip quickly drew criticism from both Malaysian and Chinese netizens, many of whom labelled the remarks as disrespectful and embarrassing.
Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police, Mohd Khalid Ismail, confirmed that the individual involved is part of the police force. He added that a formal disciplinary investigation has been initiated, although she will continue her duties while the probe is ongoing.
The police chief emphasised that officers are expected to uphold professional conduct at all times, regardless of whether they are on duty or overseas. He also noted that further action could be taken if any legal violations are uncovered during the investigation.
Viral Clip Triggers Public Backlash
The now-deleted video captured a group of Malaysian tourists waiting in line, with some covering their noses. A voice in the clip, believed to be Asyiqin, could be heard questioning whether people nearby had bathed, describing the environment as having a strong odour.
The remarks were widely condemned online, with many Malaysians expressing disappointment over the behaviour. Critics argued that such comments reflect poorly on the country’s image abroad, especially when made in a public setting and shared online.
Chinese netizens also weighed in, calling the remarks offensive and culturally insensitive. The incident quickly escalated into a cross-border online controversy, highlighting the impact of social media on international perceptions.
Apology Issued Amid Growing Pressure
Following the backlash, Asyiqin released a public apology on TikTok, acknowledging that her words had caused discomfort. She described the incident as a “spontaneous reaction” and insisted there was no intention to insult or embarrass anyone.
However, the apology came after an earlier statement from her legal representatives, which indicated she had taken action against individuals who allegedly made defamatory remarks about her online. This sequence of responses drew mixed reactions, with some questioning the sincerity of her apology.
Her lawyer also confirmed her affiliation with the police force but did not disclose her rank, further fuelling public interest in the case.
Conduct of Public Officers Under Scrutiny
The incident has reignited discussions about the behaviour of public officials outside of their official duties. Authorities reiterated that police personnel must maintain a high standard of professionalism, as their actions can influence public trust and the reputation of the force.
While the investigation continues, the case serves as a reminder of how quickly personal conduct can become a public issue in the digital age—especially when it involves individuals in positions of authority.
The outcome of the disciplinary review is expected to determine whether further sanctions or legal consequences will follow.
