Singaporean Man Fined RM9,100 (Around S$2773) for Road Rage Incident in Johor Bahru
A 40-year-old Singaporean man has been fined RM9,100 at the Magistrate’s Court for his involvement in a recent road rage incident. Cheng Kuan Poh Colin, a human resources manager, appeared in court on Thursday, June 12, where he pleaded guilty to two charges stemming from the altercation.
Details of the Incident
The first charge against Cheng involved mischief, as he was accused of damaging Ng Yeow Meng’s Malaysian-registered continental car at Jalan Sutera Tanjung 8/4, Taman Sutera Utama, at approximately 2:39 PM on June 7. The second charge pertained to insulting the modesty of 32-year-old Ng by spitting in his face during the same incident.
Cheng, who understood the charges read to him in Mandarin, admitted his guilt before Magistrate A. Shaarmini.
Court Proceedings
During the proceedings, Cheng’s lawyer, Norfarahin Mohd Yazid, requested a lower fine, citing her client’s responsibility for caring for his sick, bedridden parents. She noted that Cheng earns S$2,000 (approximately RM6,595) as a human resources manager and that this was his first offense.
The court ultimately ordered Cheng to pay a fine of RM4,300 for the first charge, with a default sentence of six months’ jail if he fails to pay. For the second charge, he was fined RM4,800, also with a default sentence of six months’ jail.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Fatihah Mohd Nizam led the prosecution in the case.
Background of the Incident
The incident gained public attention after a video of the altercation circulated on social media. The footage, recorded by a woman inside a vehicle, showed Cheng shouting and repeatedly kicking the car, resulting in damage. Following the incident, Cheng was detained on Sunday, June 8, to assist in the investigation, as confirmed by Johor Baru North OCPD Asst Comm Balveer Singh.
This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of road rage and the importance of maintaining composure in stressful driving situations.
