Sengkang Man Jailed After Pointing Scissors at Neighbours During Late-Night Dispute
A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to 46 weeks’ imprisonment after threatening his neighbours with a pair of scissors during a confrontation at a residential block in Sengkang.
The man, identified as Lim Han Khim, pleaded guilty to four charges, while six additional offences were taken into consideration by the court during sentencing. His charges included criminal intimidation, assault, theft, and causing public disturbance, reflecting a pattern of troubling behaviour over time.
The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding neighbourhood disputes, public safety, and the importance of conflict resolution within densely populated housing estates in Singapore.
Late-Night Altercation Escalated Into Violence
The incident that led to his arrest took place shortly after 1am on October 31, 2024, at Block 463A along Sengkang West Way.
Earlier that day, Lim had been drinking alcohol with a friend at a unit within the same block. In the early hours of the morning, a neighbour approached the unit after being disturbed by loud shouting, which had woken his children.
What began as a complaint quickly escalated into a physical confrontation. Lim and his friend allegedly emerged from the unit and began throwing punches at the neighbour, who retaliated. The situation intensified until a passer-by contacted the police at approximately 1:23am.
Weapon Threat Used Before Police Arrival
The altercation took a more serious turn when the neighbour, along with his wife and relatives, later returned to inform Lim that the police had arrived at the scene.
In response, Lim reportedly exited the unit holding a pair of scissors and pointed them towards the neighbour and his brother-in-law. Although the scissors were angled downwards, the act was deemed threatening and contributed to the criminal intimidation charge.
He was subsequently arrested at around 1:30am, with the weapon seized by responding officers. While the neighbour sustained minor injuries during the earlier fight, he declined medical treatment.
Pattern of Disturbances and Legal Consequences
Court documents further revealed that Lim had been involved in multiple incidents between November 2023 and October 2024, including theft and behaviour that posed risks to the safety of others in the neighbourhood.
Under Singapore law, criminal intimidation carries penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both. However, the court took into account the repeated nature of Lim’s offences, as well as the combination of violent and disruptive conduct.
The case underscores the legal consequences of escalating disputes and highlights the importance of maintaining public order within residential communities. Authorities continue to stress that acts involving threats or weapons, even in heated situations, will be treated with seriousness under Singapore’s strict legal framework.
