I went for a job interview for a research position last week and was told that this job requires staying back until 9pm everyday and coming to lab early. In addition, sometimes one have to come back during weekend.
At the end of the interview, the interviewer suddenly said that actually, the boss prefers to employ a guy in this lab so expectations will be lowered for guys for the following reasons:
1) this lab had too much girls
2) girls do not have the stamina to stay back late everyday, sometimes until 12am.
3) some girls complain of period pain and can’t work
4) when the girls marry, they complain they can’t stay back late everyday as they have family responsibilities.
Well, i guess my cv didn’t indicate my gender and neither does my name so probably the reason why i was called for an interview was that they thought i was a guy? I think i probably won’t get this job, given what was being said.
But I have a few qns to clarify:
A) is it common for research work to require staying back till 9pm everyday? If i am productive enough this wouldn’t happen much right?
B) is it true that most workplace prefers gender balance? Which means if there’s too much girls, expectations will be lowered for guys and vice versa? Or it only happen that this lab is particular about this? Have anyone encountered such issues before?
Hope to hear some insights from you guys about this. Thanks
