Two individuals working at a nightlife establishment in Japan have been arrested following allegations involving a 27-year-old female colleague.

The suspects — a 39-year-old manager identified as Maoya Suzuki and a 21-year-old female staff member named Kazuya Tano — were taken into custody after police launched an investigation into suspected criminal conduct at the venue.

According to local media reports, the woman had begun working at the girls’ bar in September 2024. Authorities later uncovered claims that she had been compelled to engage in unlawful activities over a three-month period.

Allegations of Coercion and Violence

Investigators allege that the woman was pressured into meeting numerous clients daily, with reports indicating she was made to see as many as 13 individuals per day. Over the course of three months, the total number allegedly exceeded 400.

It was reported that she generated about 1.98 million yen per month — approximately S$17,022 — during that period. Police suspect that a significant portion of the money did not remain with her.

The investigation also involves claims of physical assault. Authorities believe the woman sustained repeated injuries, and medical examinations reportedly documented more than 20 bruises.

Police are also examining allegations that her movements were monitored using a tracking device. It is claimed that she was confronted and punished if she failed to follow instructions given by her superiors.

Case Came to Light After Police Questioning

The situation reportedly came to light when the woman was arrested in July on suspicion of breaching Japan’s anti-prostitution laws. During questioning, she allegedly told officers that she felt physically and mentally drained and unable to leave her circumstances.

One of the suspects has denied key allegations, while the other has reportedly admitted involvement. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the full scope of potential offences, which may include assault and other criminal violations under Japanese law.

The case has prompted wider discussions in Japan about working conditions within certain nightlife sectors and the need for stronger safeguards for employees. Legal proceedings remain ongoing as prosecutors review the evidence gathered.
