A Japanese local politician has publicly denied allegations that she once appeared in an AV video after an old clip surged to the top of online sales rankings following speculation on social media.
Sayuri Okamoto, a city councillor in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, found herself at the centre of an online storm after users on X claimed she resembled a woman featured in an adult video reportedly filmed around 2015.
The controversy quickly gained traction across Japanese social media platforms, with users comparing facial features, moles, voice recordings and dental characteristics between the politician and the woman appearing in the video.
As the discussion intensified, the video reportedly experienced a dramatic spike in popularity, climbing to the top of sales rankings on Japanese entertainment platforms. The clip, which was reportedly sold at a relatively low price, attracted curious viewers eager to determine whether the allegations were true.
Councillor Rejects Allegations
Responding publicly for the first time, Okamoto strongly denied being the person featured in the video.
In a lengthy statement posted online, she said she had been heavily involved in political activities and election preparations during the period in question, leaving no opportunity to participate in such productions.
She also argued that her appearance has changed significantly over the years, noting differences between her current physique and that of the woman shown in the footage.
The councillor further addressed claims that the video may have been recorded in 2015, stating that she was pregnant with her first child during that period and later gave birth the same year.
According to Okamoto, pregnancy-related physical changes, including weight gain and swelling, would have made it impossible for her to resemble the woman featured in the video.
She also criticised online comparisons involving facial moles, accusing some internet users of manipulating images to support their claims.
Debate Continues Online
Despite her denial, debate has continued across Japanese social media.
Some users remain unconvinced, arguing that certain physical traits and vocal similarities are difficult to ignore. Others have suggested that legal action should be taken if the allegations are false and defamatory.
However, supporters have condemned the online scrutiny, describing it as a form of public shaming.
Okamoto said the ongoing rumours and negative comments have taken a significant toll on her wellbeing. She revealed that the situation had left her physically and emotionally exhausted and that she planned to seek medical assistance.
Political Fallout Emerges
The controversy has also sparked wider discussion about online harassment, privacy and public accountability.
Okamoto, who has previously been known for her work on anti-discrimination issues, is now facing calls from some critics to resign. Discussions about a possible recall campaign have also appeared online, although no formal action has been announced.
For now, the politician maintains that the woman in the video is not her and continues to reject all allegations linking her to the footage.
