A Japanese tourist was left seriously injured after being attacked by a group of men on a busy road in Pattaya, in an incident that has since gone viral and raised fresh concerns over tourist safety in Pattaya.
Police began investigating the case after videos of the assault circulated widely on Thai social media, showing the victim being chased, punched, and kicked by several individuals, including a motorcycle taxi rider.
The attack reportedly took place in full public view, with both locals and tourists present at the scene.
Viral Footage Shows Victim Fleeing Before Being Overpowered
In one of the clips, the 25-year-old victim, identified as Kosei Kanasashi, was seen attempting to escape while being pursued by multiple attackers.
Another video showed him running along the road before being struck by a motorcyclist, causing him to fall. Despite the fall, he managed to get back up and continued fleeing.
Rescue personnel later arrived and found him with significant injuries, including bruising to his face and body. He was also reportedly vomiting blood, indicating the severity of the assault.
The victim was subsequently transported to hospital for urgent medical attention.
Dispute Over Missing Phone May Have Triggered Attack
Preliminary accounts suggest the incident may have stemmed from a dispute involving a missing mobile phone. According to rescuers, the victim attempted to explain that a friend had dropped the device on the road.
It was alleged that one of the motorcycle taxi riders picked up the phone but refused to return it, leading to a confrontation that escalated into violence.
Further police investigations indicated that the victim had earlier been seen near Walking Street before being approached by a group of men. He was then led towards a taxi shelter, where the assault is believed to have taken place.
Investigation Stalled As Victim Leaves Hospital Without Filing Report
Despite the seriousness of his injuries, the tourist reportedly declined further medical treatment and left the hospital shortly after arrival.
Authorities have stated that they are currently unable to proceed with legal action as the victim has not lodged a formal police report or provided a full account of the incident.
Officers are continuing to gather evidence, including reviewing video footage and speaking to witnesses, while awaiting further cooperation from the victim.
The case has sparked widespread discussion online, with many calling for stronger enforcement measures to protect tourists and uphold safety standards in Thailand’s key travel destinations.
