A married company executive Jasper Lee Loong Kuan in Singapore has been sentenced to 14 and a half years’ imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane after being found guilty of raping a woman who was heavily intoxicated and unable to give consent.

The High Court ruled that the offence was aggravated by the fact that the victim was unconscious at the time and that the assault took place within the privacy of her own home. The judge also highlighted that the accused had knowingly taken advantage of her vulnerable condition.

The incident traces back to September 2021, when the 38-year-old man, identified in court documents as Li Longkuan, met the victim for the first time after connecting through work. The woman was employed as a customer service officer, while the man was a client of her company.

First Meeting Turns Into Serious Crime

The pair had arranged to meet for dinner to celebrate their shared birthday. According to court proceedings, they dined at a restaurant in VivoCity and consumed two bottles of wine during the evening.

After dinner, the man drove the woman back to her residence. Surveillance footage presented in court showed that she was already unsteady on her feet and required assistance to walk.

Upon arriving at her home, the woman vomited in the bathroom before lying down on her bed, where she quickly lost consciousness due to alcohol intoxication. Despite her condition, the man proceeded to sexually assault her.

The court heard that the victim briefly regained consciousness during the assault and attempted to resist, but was too weak to push him away.

Victim Found Traumatised After Incident

After the man left the premises, the victim managed to call the police. Officers who arrived at the scene found her naked and crouched behind her front door in a state of extreme distress.

Subsequent medical examinations revealed the presence of the man’s DNA, while toxicology reports confirmed that the victim had been suffering from alcohol poisoning at the time, rendering her incapable of consenting to any sexual activity.

Text messages sent by the victim shortly after the incident also showed her confronting the accused, stating that his actions were unacceptable.

Court Rejects Defence, Highlights Abuse of Trust

During the trial, the accused denied the charge. However, the judge found his testimony to be unreliable and described him as a dishonest witness.

In delivering the sentence, the court stressed that the accused had abused the situation by exploiting a woman who was clearly defenceless. The fact that the crime occurred in her own home further compounded the severity of the offence.

The man has since indicated his intention to appeal against both the conviction and the sentence. He has been granted bail of S$100,000 while awaiting the outcome of the appeal.

Legal Implications and Public Concern

Under Singapore law, rape is considered a serious offence with severe penalties, particularly in cases involving victims who are unable to provide consent due to intoxication or incapacitation.

The case has also drawn renewed attention to issues surrounding alcohol-related vulnerability, workplace acquaintances, and personal safety during social interactions.

Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of consent and accountability, warning that individuals who exploit vulnerable victims will face the full force of the law.
