The impressive turnout could easily rival the attendance numbers of some mainstream music artistes in the industry today.

Videos of the crowd waving the flashlights on their phones along to Ng’s music went viral across all social media platforms. Ng earned the nickname “The Cathay Busker” for his performances and huge turnout.

He started busking in 2018 but took a break during a pandemic, before starting busking again last month at The Cathay.

His virality has since garnered him 43.2k followers on Instagram and almost 25,000 followers on TikTok, catapulting him into a star.

Some of the audiences spoke to CNA, including a trio of friends; Rebecca Choo, Issac Kua and Nicole Lee, said that Ng’s performance felt like a concert, and that it was “really quite fun”.

The two girls said that they have been following Ng’s videos on TikTok for about 3 weeks and showed up to watch him perform in person.
